“Are dandelions edible? How about red clover? How do I tell if those berries are edible? How do I find wild rose hips to make tea?”
5 Years ago, photographer Carol Wingert, was asking her husband those exact same questions. Carol was walking the Yough River Trail 3 times a week, wanting to learn what wild edible plants were on the trail.
“I took all the photos for my book, Edible Plants of Pennsylvania on The Great Allegheny Passage (Gap Trail), because it has close to 97 edible and medicinal plants on it. We know these plants well, because two times a month, my husband and I lead small groups of teenagers and adults on the local part of it – the Yough River Trail – and teach them edible plants.”
Carol thought it would be a great idea to take her passion for photography, and put together a small, easy to use handbook, of the most common and identifiable edible plants along the trail. One of her readers wrote to her this week, ” What is really nice about your Wild Edible Plants book is that it only has 27 edible plants in it, and it is designed so that anyone can learn to identify them easily. I feel so much more confident now.”
“Right now, you can download all you need to learn 27 edible plants that you can start eating today for just $5 bucks. I decided to almost give it away, because the more people who learn about edible plants, the more people who will be able to pass this knowledge onto the next generation. When people eat wild edible plants, they tend to respect and take care of the earth more.”
And in today’s world, taking action and caring for the earth matters.
